In three experiments, deadline manipulation shifts primarily the boundary, while instructional emphasis also affects non-decision time and sometimes drift rate. The distribution of choices and RTs depends on specific task instructions, not just the generic speed-accuracy instruction.

Proposes a hierarchical model of binocular rivalry in which independent elements accumulate visual evidence at one level while groups of coupled elements compete for dominance at another — with feedback inhibition once a group dominates. Shows rivalry alternation statistics satisfy normative constraints of continuous decision-making: integrating evidence over space and time, choosing categorically, and concurrently evaluating alternatives. Uses random dot motion (RDM) paradigm to show that subjective awareness of having reached a decision corresponds to the DDM accumulator crossing its bound. Participants adjusted a clock to indicate when they first felt they had made up their mind; subjective decision times (tSDs) were faster for stronger motion and fit a bounded DDM. DDM parameters from tSDs alone predicted choices (accuracy) for 4 of 5 participants, providing strong evidence that consciousness = threshold crossing. Proposes this mechanism may govern how non-conscious processes pierce consciousness more broadly.
